What Our Clients Say

FAQ's

Most Frequently Asked Questions

Invisalign can now treat a variety of complex cases.

The type of treatment required is dependant on each individual case, and both treatments have unique benefits.

Invisalign is normally a great alternative to braces for teenagers.

The SmartTrack material of Invisalign clear aligners has been clinically proven to improve control of tooth movement, with over 1.6 million teenagers having transformed their smile with Invisalign Teen.

Even though the Invisalign aligners are removable, your teenager will be required to wear their Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours per day, except when they are removed for eating, brushing and flossing.

For the most effective treatment, we expect your teenagers are very disciplined and wear their aligners consistently.

However, if your teenager falls a little short and only wears them for 20 or so hours per day, the treatment should continue to be effective.

Invisalign and clear braces are similar in that they are much more difficult to detect than metal braces. While the two treatments have the same mission, there are stark differences between them.

  1. Invisalign provides virtual transparency, which is often unnoticeable in patients. While clear braces blend into the patient’s teeth, the brackets are more noticeable than Invisalign’s transparent retainer.

  2. Invisalign can be removed to brush and floss teeth, whilst ceramic braces are fixed to the tooth and require additional brushing techniques as they are unable to be removed until the treatment course has been completed.

  3. Diet also plays a large part when it comes to fixed appliances. Certain foods will need to be limited to prevent damage to the teeth and appliances. As Invisalign clear aligners can be removed whilst eating,  they enable additional flexibility around the types of foods that can be consumed.

At your teenager’s check-ups, we will be able to assess whether your teenager is wearing their aligners by the progress made.

Your teenager’s unique aligners feature compliance indicators. These indicators are located at the back of the clear aligners and easily track if your teenager is consistently wearing their aligners. The blue dot on the aligners will fade the more they are worn. If the blue dot remains bright, your teenager could be wearing their aligners less than the recommended 22 hours per day.

We also encourage weekly image sharing via the Invisalign Virtual Care App, which will enable us to assess your teenagers progress remotely on a weekly basis, ensuring Itheir teeth are moving into the desired position at the expected rate.

There are various Invisalign packages that have been tailored to treat orthodontic cases within different age groups. At Donegal Orthodontics, we offer Invisalign First which is best suited for individuals aged between six to eleven, whist Invisalign teen offers additional features and benefits for teenagers.

There are certain dental variables around each individual case which will be discussed with our specialist orthodontic team at your teenagers first appointment.

As your teeth adapt to the clear aligners,  there may be a degree of discomfort to begin with – such as a bit of aching and tenderness in the gums  as the teeth start to move.

This tends to settles down within a few days, but the duration and  amount of discomfort can vary from person to person.

The average Invisalign treatment can take between twelve to eighteen months, however, the duration of treatment can vary patient to patient.

In order to obtain a more accurate estimate of your treatment time, it’s best to meet with our orthodontists who will examine your teen’s teeth and suggest how long treatment might take.

Yes, as Invisalign aligners are removable and free from brackets or wires, there is a reduced risk of injury when playing sports.

We recommend your teenager removes their aligners whilst participating in full-contact sport. A standard or orthodontic protective gum-shield can be worn to protect the teeth throughout high impact sports.

Alternatively, your teenager can continue to wear their aligners for milder activities. As Invisalign are free from brackets or wires, there is minimal risk to a mouth injury.
